Frunkly workshop in Hamburg with 3D printer and woodworking tools

Behind the Scenes

Where Your Frunkly is Made

Welcome to the Workshop

Hi, I'm Peter. I build every Frunkly by hand in my workshop in Hamburg. I want to show you exactly how your table is made - from the first 3D print to the moment it's packaged. No factory, no assembly line. Just me, my tools, and a lot of attention to detail.

What Goes Into Your Frunkly

Birch Multiplex with Eucalyptus Veneer

Sustainably sourced, food-safe, lightweight yet incredibly strong. After testing many options, this turned out to be the perfect material for the tabletop - dimensionally stable, naturally beautiful, and built to last.

3D-Printed ABS Plastic

The base of every Frunkly is 3D-printed from ABS plastic. Heat-resistant and UV-stable - important because the base sits right under the hood where temperatures get extreme in summer.

Metal Hinges

Smooth folding mechanism that just works. The hinges went through dozens of design iterations before we found the perfect balance of resistance and ease of use.

Protective Surface Coating

A durable treatment protects the wood from moisture, UV radiation, and dirt. Easy to wipe clean and tough enough for outdoor use in any weather.

3D Printing: The Heart of Production

How a Bambu Lab P1S changed everything about how Frunkly is made.

The Breakthrough

Before I got my Bambu Lab P1S at the end of 2023, the original Series 1 was built exclusively from wood. The base was complex, bulky, and I was limited by what I could achieve without custom parts. Getting a 3D printer changed everything. Suddenly I could design perfectly fitting, custom pieces for the Tesla frunk - and that's exactly what led to the Frunkly LT.

Why 3D Printing?

  • No expensive tooling - I can iterate on designs freely without mold costs
  • Each base is precision-made for the exact frunk geometry of your Tesla
  • Design improvements go live immediately - no retooling, no waiting
  • Perfect for a one-person operation producing each piece individually

The Numbers

Printer: Bambu Lab P1S, running essentially 24/7

One complete Frunkly set (base + attachments): roughly 16 hours print time

Total production time per Frunkly: around 24 hours from start to finish

Material per set: approximately 700g of ABS filament

Why ABS Plastic?

The base sits right under the hood. In summer, with direct sunlight, it gets really hot in there. We needed a material that can handle the heat and UV exposure without degrading. We tested both ABS and ASA, and ABS turned out to be the right choice for this demanding environment.

Woodwork and Surface Treatment

The tabletop starts as a sheet of sustainably sourced birch multiplex with eucalyptus veneer. Each piece is precisely cut and shaped to fit the frunk dimensions. Every edge is carefully sanded so nothing is sharp and everything folds together cleanly. Then comes the protective surface treatment - a durable coating that shields the wood from moisture, UV, and everyday wear.

Hand Assembly

This is where everything comes together. Hinges, latches, and the 3D-printed base are assembled by hand at my workstation. I check every folding mechanism and every connection individually. The hinge design alone went through dozens of iterations before I found the right friction - enough to hold any angle, smooth enough to adjust with one hand.

Quality Control

Before any Frunkly ships, it gets a personal inspection. I check every single piece that leaves the workshop.

  • Folding mechanism: smooth operation, correct resistance
  • Surface quality: no scratches, coating intact
  • Dimensions: precise fit for your Tesla model
  • Overall impression: would I be happy to receive this?

Packaging and Shipping

Carefully packed with protective padding so your Frunkly arrives safely. Every package includes the table, all mounting hardware, and installation instructions. Compact packaging, no unnecessary filler - just what you need.

Questions About How It's Made

How long does it take to make one Frunkly?
About 24 hours from start to finish. The 3D-printed base alone takes around 16 hours of print time. Add woodwork, assembly, quality control, and packaging - it's roughly a full day per table.
Why 3D printing instead of injection molding?
At the scale I produce, 3D printing makes much more sense. No expensive molds needed, I can iterate designs instantly, and each piece is precision-made. Injection molding only makes sense at thousands of units - and I'd lose the ability to improve designs quickly.
Why ABS plastic for the base?
The base sits under the hood where it can get very hot, especially in summer with direct sunlight. ABS handles heat and UV exposure well. We tested ABS against ASA and ABS came out as the better choice for this environment.
Where do you source your materials?
The birch multiplex comes from certified sustainable sources. ABS filament from selected suppliers. Metal hinges are sourced from China. Everything is assembled in Hamburg.
What materials is the Frunkly made from?
The tabletop is birch multiplex with eucalyptus veneer - food-safe and sustainably sourced. The base is 3D-printed from ABS plastic. The hinges are metal. And a protective coating seals the wood against moisture and UV.
Can I visit the workshop?
I'm always happy to hear from fellow Tesla enthusiasts. Drop me a message at support@frunk.ly and we can figure something out.
What happens if something breaks?
Since I build every Frunkly myself, I can replace individual parts instead of you having to buy a completely new product. Get in touch at support@frunk.ly and we'll sort it out. If it's a warranty case, we cover the costs.
What does 'Handcrafted in Hamburg' mean?
It means every step happens in my workshop in Hamburg: design, 3D printing, woodwork, assembly, quality control, and packaging. No outsourcing, no anonymous factory. One person, one workshop, one table at a time. Learn more about me.
